The sound of helicopters landing had long since ceased to disturb Eva's daily routine. That is what happened, it turned out, when you lived on a military base long enough. You got used to the rotor noise, started to yell (naturally) as a helicopter approached, stopped talking when it was right overhead, and continued in the same way (naturally) until it had passed by.

Military life. A life filled with cutting sounds, burning scents, sharp colors. This was the life Eva had chosen, and she got used to every sight and sound of it.

Except for this one sound.

She squeezed the trigger, and made it again.
